Copper, brass, aluminum: real metal on your walls

Metal on a wall is not chosen like a color. It is chosen like a light. Here's how to distinguish copper from brass and aluminum, where each works best, and why patina is not a defect.

Why real metal, not a printed effect

A metallic print reflects light like glossy paper: flat, without direction. Real metal, even in a thin layer, reflects light like metal—it has specularity. This micro-difference is what distinguishes a surface that looks like metal from a surface that is metal. At fifty centimeters, the eye decides in one second.

Three metals, three lights

Copper — the warm light

Copper reflects red and orange. It enhances rooms with natural side light, and it looks particularly good in the evening, with warm lighting. Brushed, it retains a soft matte finish that forgives everything. Polished, it becomes almost mirror-like and amplifies the slightest accent lighting. It's the metal for lobbies, bars, hotel rooms—anywhere the ambiance is deliberately warm.

Copper lives. It patinas to brown, then to green (verdigris, outdoors). Indoors, the patina is slow and discreet. It can be significantly slowed down with a varnished finish—available upon project request.

Brass — the golden light

Brass is golden, stately. It works well in contrasting light and structures a room like a black frame would, but warmer. Polished, it takes on an almost object-like quality—it becomes a fixed point in the composition. Brushed, it softens and better accepts large surfaces without saturating the room.

Like copper, brass patinas—to a more matte, almost champagne hue. Here again, the varnished finish slows down the evolution without completely freezing it.

Aluminum — the neutral light

Aluminum is neither warm nor cool. It is the stable contemporary metal: it performs the same at 9 AM, 2 PM, 10 PM. No patina. No chromatic shift. For high-end retail, a medical office, a tertiary space that needs to look sharp for a decade: aluminum is the choice.

Brushed, it evokes stainless steel without the harshness. Polished, it becomes a clear mirror. Its neutrality is also a signature: in a palette rich in wood and stone, aluminum provides breathing room.

Design or acoustics — depending on what the wall needs to do

At Cambois, real metal comes in two formats. The choice depends on a simple question: should this wall reflect or absorb sound?

Design panel — when the wall needs to be seen

Solid real metal on waterproof black MDF. Clear appearance, choice of finish (brushed, polished, mirror). This is the format to choose for lobbies, accent walls, presentation areas. Smooth surfaces reflect sound: provide acoustic compensation elsewhere in the volume if the room is reverberant.

Acoustic panel — when the wall also needs to calm

The same real metal, perforated to allow sound to pass through to an acoustic felt made from recycled plastic. The panel absorbs, and the perforation itself becomes a pattern. Can be screwed directly to the wall or ceiling, without adhesive: installation is quick and the panel remains removable. For open-plan offices, restaurants, shared meeting spaces—image and acoustics in a single installation.

Four questions to specify without error

  1. What is the dominant light? Warm and natural: copper. Mixed with a golden accent: brass. Stable neutral LED: aluminum.
  2. What is the viewing distance? Close: polished or mirror, for depth. From a distance: brushed, for material without glare.
  3. Is patina accepted or not? If yes: copper or brass without varnish, living. If no: aluminum, or copper/brass with varnished finish.
  4. Is acoustics a concern? Beyond 30 to 40% hard surface in the volume, plan for acoustic panels as compensation.

Three mistakes to avoid

Mixing two golden metals. Copper and brass in the same room require clear intent. Without hierarchy (one dominant, one accent), the eye hesitates and the room loses its readability.

Underestimating the reflection of spot lighting. A spotlight directed at a polished surface will cause glare. Validate the position of light sources before installation, not after.

Ignoring the expected patina. If the project needs to maintain the exact shade of Day 1, choose aluminum, or explicitly request the varnished finish. Otherwise, tell the client: the material will live. Patina is part of the choice.
